Chunky Choices

How do you like your chunks?

Chunk variations are a result of the yarn, needle, stitch and the knitter.

Chunky starts at around about 12 ply yarn and can go up to what ever yarn the knitter desires. Interesting chunks and textures can be created from alternative fibres and materials - milk, soy, bison, leather, even wire!

Needles for the standard yarns are readily available. But some of us like something a little different and will spend hours scouring Etsy that certain something. Handmade chunky needle sizes will start around the 10mm in a variety of materials, but for the serious chunky knitter using the ultra high diameter yarns you'll need to start looking from 30mm. Hand made needles at this size maybe made from various woods, however a popular choice for the massive handknits is the PVC pipe variety.

Then there is the use of body parts - finger knitting and arm knitting are good fun and produce some great textures.

The knitting artist spends hours, months and even years experimenting and perfecting their signature look. Their preferred combination of material and neeles along with their own knitting style will produce a unique finish.

Inspirational chunky knitters for me include: Bauke Knottnerus who designed the gob smacking 'phat' series, Anna Mo who knits the enormous stitch blankets and Jackie Fink and Australian Knit Artist who creates functional homewares and a fantastic range of chunky knit installations.

So how chunky do you like your chunks?
