The Origin Story

A few people have asked how 'The Flying Lamb' came about, and I'd love to tell you a fabulous tale filled with drama, tension a dash of romance and near death experience. Unfortunately I can't tell you that story but I’m happy to share what really did happen...

Once upon a time there was a slightly deranged woman who took solace and joy in her knitting. For much of the time she was content with knitting regular size yarn of no specific origin on regular sized needles of no specific origin.

As often happens, she became bored with regular yarn and regular needles and needed bigger yarn. This of course led to bigger needles. Of no specific origin. Soon she was experimenting with 2 strands of 12 ply (really big yarn readily available in your big name shops). Still this wasn't enough. She needed even bigger yarn.

So what does she do? She went on a quest to find answers to the age old question: How chunky can a chunky knitter knit before a chunky knitter collapses into a dribbling mess of chunky knitting?

Google enlightened the knitter and shone the light of understanding ... hello youtube, hello Pinterest, good bye Sunday afternoons.

Months of experimentation and stash building (aka: stash hiding from the husband) followed. Regular yarn was replaced with an Australian wool stash. This grew into a passion for unspun wool, raw and direct from the mill. Needles blossomed to huge proportions, hand made and hand shaped.

Slowly a king sized blanket grew and fell of the needles. More experimentation followed and Luxe Big Knits was born.

Luxe opened an Etsy store, Facebook page and continued to build the stash.

Still this was not enough. She needed more.

“Husband, I am not content with the name of my business. Whatever shall I do?”

“Wife, re-name your chunky knitting business: The Flying Lamb.”

And they lived happily ever after.
