You are 100% accountable for everything that you have and will experience in your life.
The good, the bad, and the fabulous. Your achievements, relationships, health and wellness, your income, debts, and feelings. Everything.
Like me, you may have been conditioned to blame something outside of ourselves for the parts of our life we don’t like. We blame our parents, our bosses, our friends, our co-workers, our clients, our spouse, the weather, the economy, our astrological chart, our lack of money—anyone or anything we can pin the blame on. We never want to look at where the real problem is—ourselves.
If you want to create the life of your dreams, then you are going to have to take 100% accountability for your life as well. That means giving up all your excuses, all your victim stories, all the reason why you can’t and why you haven’t up until now, and all your blaming of outside circumstances. You have to give them all up forever.
What do I mean by accountability?
Jay Fiset, author of “Reframe Your Blame” defines accountability as: "A framing device that eliminates blame of self and others, providing the power of choice, participation, and co-creation of the experiences and results in life, real or imagined."
To me, accountability is about taking ownership of every thought, word, and action, as well as my experiences, which are the result of my thoughts, words, and actions.
And it's about the power of choice. My choice and zero excuses.
My choice on how I feel, respond, react, interpret the experience, my choice on how I want to live my life. Ownership of choice without blaming myself or others.
Choosing the power of choice
While most of us don't realise it we have always had the power to make it different, to get it right, to produce the desired result. For whatever reason we have not used that power. Maybe it's been conditioning, ignorance, fear, needing to be right, the need to feel save the world, or a million and one other reasons. The big deal is that from this point forward you have the power of choice! The power to choose the life you want to live.
The past is the past. Now it's up to you to take 100% accountability for everything that does or doesn’t happen to you.
On a scale of 1 to 10, how accountable are you in your life?
1 means you totally blame others and yourself for every result, experience and feeling – it’s not your fault. 10 means you totally own every result, experience and feeling, without blaming anyone or anything. Take a few minutes to really think about this, reflect on recent conversations, what does the voice in your head is saying, your contentment levels ... what’s your rating? Whatever you rate your accountability is totally fine, the important result is that you have gained awareness. The big question is:
“What are you going to do now?”
Next time something doesn’t turn out as planned, take a moment to consider:
What did I do or not do to create that result?
What was I thinking? What were my beliefs?
What did I say or not say?
What did I do or say that caused the other person to act that way?
What do I need to do differently next time to get the result I want?
I wonder what would happen if you dropped the blame game (yourself or the rest of the world) and started to make choices, took on 100% accountability and started living the life you want.
